Where to Build Connections

LinkedIn
Still the leading space for career growth and professional discovery.

How to Use LinkedIn to Build Your Network

Facebook
Ideal for joining local groups, reconnecting with old connections, and tapping into shared interests.

Instagram
Perfect for building a personal brand and connecting visually with others who share your goals.

Smaller & Niche Communities
Whether it’s a subreddit, a private Slack channel, or a course-based cohort, sometimes the best conversations happen outside of major platforms. Not sure where to start, searching Google (or using an AI Chat tool) is always a safe bet.

Google Suggests: How to Find Small, Targeted Online Communities

According to Google Search via their “new” AI feature, finding smaller online communities can be a powerful way to connect more deeply and stay focused on your goals. Here’s what Google recommends:

  1. Using search engines (like Google/Bing) and/or social media channels will be the more efficient way to find hyper-specific communities.
When using these channels, be specific in your searches, like “UX design Slack groups” or “creative writing Discords.” Use hashtags on platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn to find aligned conversations.

  2. Join discussion forums and message boards
Many communities live on long-running forums with rich archives and active threads. Just remember that when you join the discussions, it is important to interact and be an active participant to get the most value.

  3. Explore community-focused platforms
Sites like Discord, Mighty Networks, and Tribe offer intentional spaces for conversation and collaboration. Have you joined these communities?

  4. Follow niche blogs and websites
These often have comment sections, newsletters, or integrated communities that attract highly engaged audiences. One example could be to find an SEO expert on LinkedIn. Find their blog and then sign up for their newsletter. These newsletter are typically free but could be gated. If you are concerned about sharing your main email, create a new email that is used for connecting and learning.

  5. Look at online course communities
Platforms like Patreon, Coursera, and Kajabi often include learning-based communities that double as peer networks. Learn about the industry and ask questions about the topics that you are interested in.

  6. Explore Reddit
Subreddits on everything from career advice to knitting circles make it easy to dive into any topic with others who care. Just remember that Reddit rabbitholes are a real thing; ensure that you are devoting the appropriate amount of time to this channel. This can be said for all social channels.

Tip:  Before devoting time (and energy) to any channel or community, be sure to spend some time observing the tone and activity of the group to make sure it's a healthy, supportive environment that can help you achieve your goals.
