When you hear about a new app or product launch, you’ll often see terms like Alpha and Beta. But what do they really mean, and why are they so important for shaping great products like Bonsai Social?

Let’s break it down.

What is Alpha Testing?

Alpha is the earliest stage of testing where a small group of people, typically internal teams and a select group of early users, try the product before the public ever sees it.

Think of it like planting a seed: the product is still fragile, not everything works perfectly, and it needs extra care.

The goal is to:

  • Test core features in real-world scenarios

  • Find bugs and glitches early

  • Collect honest feedback before the product scales

Because the product is still being built, Alpha tests are often closed. That means only invited testers get access.

What is Beta Testing?

Once the biggest issues are fixed and the product is more stable, it moves into Beta testing which usually involves a larger group of users, sometimes even open to the public.

At this stage, the product is closer to launch-ready, and the focus shifts to:

  • Testing usability at scale

  • Making sure the product works across different devices and use cases

  • Fine-tuning the user experience

Real-World Example: Apple’s iPhone

ree

When Apple launched the first iPhone in 2007, it didn’t go straight from idea to store shelves. Internally, engineers and trusted testers had access to Alpha builds that were buggy and the features incomplete.

Those private tests were essential for catching problems early. By the time the iPhone reached the public, most of the big risks had been smoothed out. Just don't ask Android users their opinion.

That cycle — Alpha (internal/closed), then Beta (external/wider), then launch — has become the gold standard for building great products.

Why Bonsai Social is Starting in Alpha

We’ve launched Bonsai Social in closed Alpha because we want to:

  • Give our earliest testers exclusive access to shape the product

  • Fix issues before inviting more users in

  • Build something meaningful with our community, not just for them

Our Alpha users' feedback during this stage is invaluable. It helps us grow Bonsai’s roots strong, so when we expand to Beta, the experience feels polished, stable, and genuinely useful.

Although our Alpha is closed, our waitlist is open! Join now.
